Tomorrow We Say Goodbye

. . .beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Margaret Wolfe Hungerford

She's held her place near the top of my Bulletin/Inspiration board for almost 14 years.

Why She Has to Go ~

I'm going Minimalist and its tentacles have reached into my personal workspace which in previous generations was called a spare bedroom. What used to inspire or remind me now just distracts and annoys me. I'm serious about this. Only drastic measures will do---everything must go!!!

Why Clutter is so Hard to Conquer

I read somewhere that the word decide comes from a Latin word meaning to kill. It's the root of words like homicide and pesticide. And 'de' means two, so deciding on one thing means you have to kill the other thing. This is precisely why decluttering is so hard.

Strike a Pose

But, before this beautiful lady fades to black, allow me to introduce you. Her name is Dee Hawks. She and her sister were 1950's fashion models who went to Hollywood, but didn't end up in the movies. Instead Dee married legendary director Howard Hawks and her sister Eden married Groucho Marx. A decade later Town & Country magazine talked her into sitting for this photo in the lobby of the Plaza Athénée in Paris.

Looking at her this evening I wonder why I kept her for so long.
It's the lines, I kept her because of the lines.
Her jaw and neck. Her back. Her arm and the V of her gloved hand.
She's got artistic lines.

The magazine dubbed her profile 'perfect'. I agree. But, I need more white space in my new Home Office concept, so au revoir Dee Hawks and thanks for gracing my Inspiration board for all these years.

Trivial Pursuit

Also found buried under two layers of assorted items pinned to the board were clippings and post-its with the following trivia:

  • Seven is the maximum number of tasks that should be on a daily to-do list.
    Can I get an Amen?

  • "Habit is either the best of servants or the worst of masters."
    Nathaniel Emmons

  • 14 really hard words for a word game called Jotto that Gary taught me to play on an otherwise romantic trip to the Tickle Pink Motel in Carmel Highlands.

  • KAIZEN is the process of achieving sustained success through small steady steps.

  • POTHER is a confused or fidgety flurry of activity as defined as commotion.

  • This quote seen on the Dollar Shave Club box:
"I like shaving with a dull razor."
    No one, ever

  • Seth Godin's 7 words that define your tribe: "People like us do things like this."

  • And my very favorite is a comment somebody left on Regina Anaejionu's Facebook group after a FB Live event: "I gave up blogging a year ago, but just didn't admit it."

If you've read this far I want to offer a humble thank you for your time and attention.
I said I was writing for me, but that doesn't mean that I'm not writing to you :)

Your Turn

Do you have an Inspiration board?
What kinds of things have you saved and why do you think they resonated with you? This isn’t therapy, but it can be illuminating.
